The Republican Hostage Crisis

Donald Trump continues to attempt to overthrow our election and our constitution.   His increasingly frantic efforts to convert the Whitehouse into an autocracy have been breathtaking in their brazen disregard for everything this nation has ever held dear.    In other words, it is typical Trumpism.

Any American with an ounce of patriotism would stand up to this sham and denounce it as an assault on the rights of every voter in this nation.   If Donald Trump were to somehow succeede, it will be the end of American Democracy and the beginning of a Civil War.

Recent posts from the Arizona GOP seem to suggest that a Civil War is what Trump loyalists will attempt if Democracy wins.

What has happened?  How has a party that has always painted itself as the patriotic defenders of democracy become the party willing to kill Americans and destroy democracy?

I think it is clear that the GOP has spent the last few 4 decades feeding the tiger hoping it will eat them last, and now, is holding on for dear life to a monster that has no loyalty.  Right Wing mouthpieces like Rush Limbaugh, G. Gordon Liddy, Sean Hannity, Glen Beck and Tucker Carlson have made a fortune by appealing the outer fringes of Right Wing movements and pulling the mainstream toward them.   More and more of these "fringe" ideas have gained traction over the years, growing the GOP base.  While this was going on,  the GOP Reaganite core was happy to welcome the useful rubes into the tent as it allowed them to win elections and advance their cause.

They failed to realize how as time passed, the outer fringes were growing to surpass the core.

In Libertarian circles, there is a joke that "if the gun people, and the weed people ever got together, they would be an unstoppable political force!"   I think I have heard this in one form or another every time I have gone to the range in the past 20 years.  Unfortunately, that is not what happened, same idea, but much more horrific.

Instead, what the 40 years of fringe coalition building in republican tent has created is a destructive monster made of anti-establishment groups like the Tea Party, working with Immigration Hawks working with White Nationalist, working with the right wing gun people.  For a long time, this beast had no common cause to draw them together outside opposition to the Democrat platform.  The "Country Club" Republicans could maintain order as a united core while gaining the free votes from fringe groups that would receive nothing but a boogey man when the elections came.

This exploitive arrangement between the "Country Club" Republicans and the Fringe Blue Collar Republicans seemed to work well for the elites for decades.  Regulations were rolled back.  Labor was disarmed and defanged, Corporate's profits went up, CEO Pay rose exponentially all while worker wages lay stagnant or even fell in relation to GDP.

But the party could not last forever.

While the Right wing fringes lacked a unifying ideal, they eventually found a unifying figurehead in Donald Trump.   Here was a foul mouthed anti-establishment figure who would be a brick through the window of a system that the fringes all despised!   They flocked to him with cult-like loyalty as the Elite sect watched in disbelief.    The 2016 Republican "Never-Trump" movement quickly died as it's members, like Lindsey Graham, all got in line behind Donald Trump.   They were rewarded too as an unprecedented number of Federal Judge positions and 3 supreme court seats were handed to the party.

But they still had the tiger by the tail.
And now the tiger, fatally wounded, has turned!  Since his landslide election defeat on November 3rd.   Donald Trump has been flailing around like a madman attempting to grasp victory form the thin air.    He embarrasses himself and his party with every tweet, every false accusation, every case laughed out of court.
But the Republican Establishment core can say nothing.
They realize, too late, that they are now hostages to this monster.

That fringe coalition they built is running the party and they only just realized it.    If any of them dares to speak out, to acknowledge the will of the people, to stand for American Democracy, the Trumpist beast will turn on them, destroy them in the primary and end their career.

So the traditional GOP now stands with a gun to it's head, and Trump's absurd election coup on the desk in front of them.   Hostages, with an offer they cannot refuse.   Is it any wonder so many sign on?
